My first lesson plan!

Phonics Vowel Pattern /ight/

Grade: First

Time: 11 minutes

Concept / Topic To Teach: Rime /ight/ and its phonological word family

Goals: This lesson is designed to introduce the student to the word family /ight/ and assist them in recognizing familiar words in that family.

Objectives:

  • Associate the sound /ĭ/ with igh.
  • Blend, read, and build words with long i spelled igh
  • Recognize words that end in the /ight/ family
  • Apply knowledge of letter-sounds to decode unknown /ight/ words

Required Materials:

  • Scott Foresman Reading Street Grade 1, Unit 4
  • Word card: Knight
  • Star Light, Star Bright
  • There Once Was a Knight
  • Dwight the Knight Family Time handout
  • Bag, various /ight/ items for in the bag

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):

  • Recite from poster Star Light, Star Bright together as a class

Step-By-Step Procedures:

  • Blending Strategy: 4 minutes
    • Connect: Write light. What do we know about reading this word? It has the long i sound. Today we will learn about words with the long i sound spelled ight.
    • Use Sound-Spelling Card: Display knight card. This is a knight. The sound you hear at the end of knight is /ĭ/. Say it with me: /ĭ/.
    • Model: Write might. The igh in this word stands for /ĭ/. This is how I blend this word. Segment and blend might. Let's blend this word together: /m/ /ĭ/ /t/, might.
    • Group Practice: Say each sound and blend the sounds together. Continue with flight, night, bright, fight, right.
  • Bag that Word: 5-7 minutes
    • Read through There Once Was a Knight
    • Call on students to come pick an item out of the bag pertaining to the poem
    • Write what the item is on the board and say the word together, blending.

Plan For Independent Practice:

  • Take home work:
    • Family Time poems to read
    • Build words worksheet

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):

  • Students circle ight words in Star Light, Star Bright

It may not be good, but I am kind of proud of it!
