Today in the last class of Intro to Urban Education, we had a guest speaker, Dr. Kay Jeter. Dr. Jeter is a professor at Central State University, and she had some wonderful things to say about teaching in an urban environment, and to a multicultural classroom.

Three teacher things from Dr. Jeter:

  1. Students do not necessarily feel overjoyed at the thought of new information. Many times they have feelings of frustration and stupidity because they think the task is impossible or too hard. As a teacher, I need to recognize this feeling and correct it through efficient teaching strategies.
  2. Speaking of which… here is a lesson plan that Dr. Jeter gave that is an organizational plan of attack.
    1. Review- what did we do yesterday? Link to new info.
    2. Overview- What are we doing today? Talk about how it fits in the Big Picture of the subject/school.
    3. Presentation- Teach the skills using three things: Tell the children, show the skill, give something to do
    4. Exercise- practice! This is where methods come in.
    5. Summary- The summary is always done by the children, not the teacher. Ask them what they learned today.
  3. Finally, we did an inventory of a pretend student's Favorites. These included: Book, Candy Bar, Entertainment Star, Hobbies, Thing to Do, Movie, Story, and TV Show. As teachers, integrating students interests into lessons make the lesson more relative to life, and the student's are more apt to remember it.
