Emma is my favorite of all the Jane Austen stories. I watched the newer movie version last night (the one with Gwyneth Paltrow) and it was wonderful.
Emma Woodhouse is a somewhat manipulative matchmaker who takes it upon herself to match her newest friend, Harriet Smith. Her friend, Mr. Knightly, offers sage advice on the matter, which Emma takes into no account. Instead, there are many mishaps when the men that Harriet pursues engage and marry elsewhere. I love this story because of the subtle romance between Mr. Knightly and Emma, one that is based on friendship. I also think that Mr. Knightly is the best hero of the Austen collection, he is so kind and stable.
The story is full of quirky characters, from Mrs. Elton to Miss Bates, who make the story come alive and offer humorous points. Even though I generally dont like movies, and especially long movies, I thought that the hour and forty five minutes went by fast.
All in all, this movie was a splendid one, and it accurately captured a timeless classic by Jane Austen. I would highly suggest you watch the movie, and also read the book.
